چکیده
Experiments carried out with the coccolithophorid E~Gliania h~4xkqvi maintained in batch cultures showed that the patterns of photosynthetic carbon metabolism characteristic of this species are: ( I) carbon incorporation into proteins only represents about 20% of total carbon fixation into organic carbon, (2) protein a~.;:k?s in darkness is a significant and growth-dependent process, (3) most of the carbon fixed photosynthetically (45--600/F) fl_ *ws towards the lipid fraction, (4) the relative contribution of lipid-c to ce!lular biomass is directly related to the amount of calcite-L” present as coccoliths, (5) half of the carbon incorporated into polysaccharides during the light period is respired during the night, (6) d:trk “C k~ses durii~g the night generally represent IO13% of gross photosynthesis. and (7) the release of dissolved organic carbon is related to growth stage and accounts for 2-60/o of the total amount of carbon incorporated photosynthetically. Most of these lXIttems of carbon partitioning were validated in natural phytoplunkror~ asser,~blagzs dominated by I:‘. Arrx/e,vi during sampling conducted in the Norwgiart fjords. The results nrr: interpreted and discussed iti &SiIIs of their potential ecological and biogeochemical significance.

Preparation of Axenic Cultures of Algae by Use of a French Press.
The differences in fragility of microorganisms when treated in the French press are useful for destroying bacteria and mold contaminants, and assist in the preparation of axenic cultures of Chlorella.
متن کاملThe effect of bacteria on the sensitivity of microalgae to copper in laboratory bioassays.
Although single-species laboratory toxicity tests with microalgae are sensitive and highly reproducible, they lack environmental realism. Interactions between algae and their associated bacteria, either in the plankton or in biofilms, may alter algal sensitivity to contaminants, which are not mimicked in laboratory toxicity tests. This study investigated the effects of simple algal-bacterial re...
متن کاملEntamoeba Shows Reversible Variation in Ploidy under Different Growth Conditions and between Life Cycle Phases
Under axenic growth conditions, trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica contain heterogenous amounts of DNA due to the presence of both multiple nuclei and different amounts of DNA in individual nuclei. In order to establish if the DNA content and the observed heterogeneity is maintained during different growth conditions, we have compared E. histolytica cells growing in xenic and axenic cultures...
متن کاملInhibition of the Rumen Ciliate Entodinium caudatum by Antibiotics
Axenic cultures of free-living aerobic ciliates, such as Tetrahymena thermophila and Paramecium aurelia, have been established and routinely used in laboratory research, greatly facilitating, or enabling characterization of their metabolism, physiology, and ecology. Ruminal protozoa are anaerobic ciliates, and they play important roles in feed digestion and fermentation. Although, repeatedly at...
متن کاملA Metagenomic Approach to Cyanobacterial Genomics
Cyanobacteria, or oxyphotobacteria, are primary producers that establish ecological interactions with a wide variety of organisms. Although their associations with eukaryotes have received most attention, interactions with bacterial and archaeal symbionts have also been occurring for billions of years. Due to these associations, obtaining axenic cultures of cyanobacteria is usually difficult, a...
